John Christopher Depp was born to John Depp Sr. and Betty Sue Palmer on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, and moved to Miramar, Florida in the 1970's where he was mainly raised. He was one of three children, Danny, Debbie and Christie-who is his personal manager. Johnny's heritage includes French, Irish, German and Cherokee descent. His mother's grandmother was full Cherokee and his father is also part Cherokee, so Johnny Depp is one-quarter Native American and his last name Depp is of French origin. While growing up, his family constantly moved from location to location, living in twenty different places. He even recalls a time in which his family moved into one of his neighboring houses. At the age of 13, Johnny's mother purchased him a guitar and he soon began playing with different garage bands.
In 1978, at the age of 15, Johnny's parents divorced and a year later Johnny dropped out of school to work towards rock stardom with his band, "The Kids" who were very successful locally. The band journeyed to Los Angeles for a record deal and changed their name to, "Six Gun Method." The sister of the drummer, Lori Anne Allison, became Johnny's wife on December 20, 1983 which caused tension between the band and they decided to split up, never reaching their record deal. However, Johnny still worked mildly in the music industry by collaborating with, "Rock City Angels" and co-writing their song, "Mary" that appeared on their debut album. In 1985, Johnny and his good friend, former U.S. Marine sergeant, Earl Stevenson were close to being in a music video put together by the Wolf Brothers in Los Angeles, but sadly they were turned down.
Johnny and his wife Lori Anne worked hard just to make ends meat. She worked as a make-up artist and he had a variety of odd jobs, including telemarketing. Lori Anne then introduced Johnny to famous actor Nicholas Cage, who advised Johnny to turn to acting as a means of supporting himself and his wife. However, things did not turn out so smoothly at first, his film career progressed slowly and in 1985, he divorced his wife. In the following years, Johnny has been linked romantically to other female stars including Sherilyn Fenn, Jennifer Grey, Winona Ryder and Kate Moss. One night, while while he was with Kate Moss, they had an arguement that caused him to trash his hotel room. He was arrested and spent one night in jail and paid off thousands of dollars for damages. While working on THE NINTH GATE in 1998, Johnny Depp met Vanessa Paradis. Their long-term relationship resulted in two wonderful children, Lily-Rose Melody Depp born May 27, 1999 and John Christopher Depp III (Jack) born April 9, 2002. He and his family split of their time living in Los Angeles and also in a villa in Southern France. Johnny also owns an island in the Caribbean where he spents some of his time relaxing and also owns property in Cornwall, England. It has been rumored that Johnny may be planning on moving to Connecticut as well.
Johnny Depp has also admitted to doing self-mutilation when he was younger, based on his family problems and some of his own insecurities. He states that he has seven or eight scars from self-harm and discussed his self-mutilation as, "My body is a journal in a way. It's like what sailors use to do, where every tattoo meant something, a specific time in your life when you make a mark on yourself, whether you do it yourself with a knife or with a professional tattoo artist." (from 1993 DETAILS interview.) Johnny admits that his own self-image and self-esteem can be very testing at times, but he claims that he is in his happiest state right now in his career and with his family.
Johnny Depp's Film Career
Johnny Depp is one of the most well-known and successful actor of his time with chosing so many diverse and different roles that he portrays extremely well. This is why it is hard to believe that Johnny never even dreamed of acting while growing up and his acting career all starting accidentally. He was advised to try acting to support himself and his wife by Nicholas Cage and he done it so well that it caused a highly-acclaimed set of roles and awards.
Johnny's first movie role came in 1984 when he took on the role as Glen Lantz, which he rejected at first, in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. He then had other roles in PRIVATE RESORT and SLOWBURN and also had a minor role in 1986's PLATOON. However, his major success came in 1987 when he assumed the role of Tom Hanson on 21 JUMPSTREET, a crime-based television show on FOX. Many claim that the show created Johnny into an overnight success by becoming a major teen idol, famous for his looks which he disliked very much. He never cared for the label as a heart-throb that came with the show, but with $45 000 per episode, he stayed on. He exited the show by Season 5, causing ratings to slide and the cancellation of the show. Many claim it was Johnny Depp who kept the show living and without him, there wasn't a chance it could go on.
With the completion of his work on 21 JUMPSTREET, Johnny was anxious to get rid of his pretty-boy image that the production companies placed on him, and to do this he began to choose his roles very carefully. He chose roles that were very different from his earlier work, such as Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker in CRY-BABY, a musical parody of Grease and also played Edward Scissorhands, an lonely outsider with scissors for hands, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe. Many claim that working on EDWARD SCISSORHANDS gave Johnny his big break and he soon found himself working with other successful actors and actresses, such as Leonardo DiCaprio in WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE?, Marlon Brando in DON JUAN DEMARCO and Al Pacino in DONNIE BRASCO.
Johnny Depp is the most diverse actor and is known for choosing different and challenging roles that he pulls off successfully. Some of his most diverse roles are:
Captain Jack Sparrow, the roguish and sly pirate from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. Axel Blackmar, the insightful Innuit who claims to hear the fishes dreams from ARIZONA DREAM. Sam, an eccentric and wired Buster Keaton fan in BENNY AND JOON and Icabod Crane, the nervous yet cowardly brave detective in SLEEPY HOLLOW. Plus other astonishing roles that will never be forgotten in the entertainment buisness and film industry.
Johnny Depp's film career and his insight of role choice has led him to have a close friendship and buisness relations with the well-known and successful director Tim Burton. Burton's sense of dark and creative visionary and interesting characters has caused Johnny to become amazed by his work, and together they collaborated on five films to date, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, ED WOOD, SLEEPY HOLLOW, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and CORPSE BRIDE, which are all directed by Burton, with Johnny cast as the lead role in each. It is quoted that Johnny thanks Burton for saving him from becoming, "a loser, an outcast, just another piece of expendable Hollywood meat." It is in the air that Johnny and Burton will collaborate for the sixth time in the film industry, only time will tell.
Johnny Depp also tried buisness from the director's chair when he directed THE BRAVE, a film that showed the struggles of a Native American, trying to support his family. However, critics and reviews did not show support for his film and it was never given an American release. But with that negative aspect put aside, Johnny had more positive events in his film career, including being nominated twice for Best Actor at the Oscars for FINDING NEVERLAND and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, he also recieved six Golden Globe nominations and won Best Actor at the Ericsson Awards for CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. Not to mention that he also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and his hand and foot prints can be seen in front of the Grauman's Chinese Theater.

Johnny was then arrested and questioned by the police for damages done to a hotel suite in New York and he was arrested again in 1999 for a violent fight with paparazi outside a restaurant where he dined with girlfriend Vanessa Paradis.
In FREDDY'S DEAD: THE FINAL NIGHTMARE, Johnny plays a teen on a television screen. On the end credits of the film, he is credited as "Oprah Noodlemantra" which is a name he uses when registered at hotels so that he has something funny when recieving wake-up calls.
